Recipe Notes

As I mentioned above, fresh herbs are what make this chip dip special. I highly recommend them. However, if you’re in a pinch, you can substitute dried herbs.

If you do use dried herbs, I recommend cutting back a bit on the amounts since dried herbs have a more potent and concentrated flavor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some questions people often ask about homemade chip dip. If you don’t see your question in this list, please leave it in the comments.

How can I cut down on the calories?

You can use light sour cream and light mayonnaise if you want to cut down on calories. I would opt for light instead of fat-free ingredients. Not only is the fat good for you, but the fat-free versions also don’t have nearly as much flavor.

How do you make it taste spicier?

If you want a spicy chip dip, then I would chop up a jalapeno and add it to the dip. Remember to remove the jalapeno seeds first. They are where most of the heat lives and will really light up the dip if you don’t!

Can you make chip dip with Greek yogurt?

Yes, I have heard of people using Greek yogurt instead of sour cream. There are quite a few reasons for this swap. Greek yogurt is often higher in protein and lower in calories.

My only hesitation is that you can taste the difference. If you want to use Greek yogurt, I suggest using a little less than you would sour cream and using more mayonnaise.

How do you make chip dip thicker?

The thickest ingredient in this dip is sour cream. If your dip isn’t thick enough, you can always try to add more sour cream or cut back on how much mayonnaise you use.

Can you freeze homemade chip dip?

Yes, you can freeze homemade chip dip, but I don’t recommend it. When you thaw the chip dip, it will have a slightly altered consistency. It just tastes so much better when it is fresh.

If you freeze the chip dip, keep it in an airtight and freezer-safe container in the freezer for up to 6 months.

How long does homemade chip dip last in the refrigerator?

Homemade chip dip will stay the freshest in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. After that, the dip will start to separate.
