Other variations

We love this recipe as is, but it would be good served with a few extra additions, too.

Try adding extra veggies like caramelized onions or sautéed green peppers.

Substitute your favorite cheese (like pepper jack) in place of provolone.

Add a bit of horseradish inside the crescents (or use it to dip). My kids don’t love this option as much, but I think it’s so tasty with that added kick.

What a great use of crescents! I make crescent dogs in my house once a month it seems. My kids love the handheld dinners.

    Thanks for this post!

  6. Michelle says:

I don't know how to make these without the insides being super doughy. I've had this problem with other stuffed crescents. There must be something that everyone knows that I don't...what am I doing wrong?

  7. RandomLove says:

Thanks for posting this recipe sounds great going to make it for my picky teenagers this weekend.

  8. aubrey says:

    I have the same problem!

  9. Laura says:

I make these all the time for my preschoolers lunch box! The only tweak is that I add a bit of caramelized onion and garlic into it as well (which softens up the cheese a bit for easier rolling!). They freeze well so I can just use them as needed.

  10. Laura Benavidez-Peterson says:

Hello there! I first discovered you gals (on YouTube) while searching recipes for the IP I received for Christmas and then I just kinda started stalking you 🤣 While we’re here staying at home like the rest of the country I was searching for something easy to make for dinner (just me and my 15 y/o daughter) and happened across this recipe. It was super easy and I had practically everything right here at home (crazy how that happened). It made quite a big batch (for just 2) but these were as good the next day (I just ate them without reheating) while working from home. I found several other recipes I plan on making soon! Thank you for taking the time to put your recipes out there for the rest of us to enjoy! Especially those of us that have no imagination when it comes to cooking!

  11. Cyd says:

Hi Laura. This is the sweetest comment we have received in a long time. I hope you and your daughter are doing well while being quarantined. So glad you found us. We have weekly videos on You-tube and a lot of them are for the Instant Pot. Let us know if you have any questions on recipes. We would love to help. Stay home and stay safe!!! The Six Sisters

  12. Laura Benavidez-Peterson says:

Cyd, best wishes to you and all your families! We are both staying home and health! I’ve been watching your YouTube channel a lot more lately looking for more recipes and this weekend we’re planning on making the Lasagna in the springform pan and D&G IP Apple Crisp dessert recipe. One question?!? Do you think I should consider purchasing an extra IP pot and do you prefer a non-stick pot or a stainless steel one?

  13. Cyd says:

You can easily make both of these recipes with one instant pot. You may the additional accessories (pans) to make certain recipes. Some of the sisters have 2 instant pots and it is really helpful. But know that you can also get buy with one. Here is the amazon link to our favorite instant pot. It's the Instant Pot 6 quart duo. If you have a large family you can get it in the 8 quart size. https://amzn.to/2ye9W3J

  14. Amber Marable says:

So much fun making this! It turned out delicious 😋 I tried cooking at 375 instead of the 350. The dough cooked better for me at that temperature

  15. Brittany Walker says:

I loved how easy, cheap, and yummy this recipe was! My toddler and husband couldn't get enough of them! Definite going to be a staple in our week night dinner meal planning!

  16. Julls says:

Could this appetizer be any easier or more delicious?

FAQs

What is French dip sauce made of? ›

To make it, you're going to place your roasting pan with the beef drippings on the stove top before adding your onions, garlic, thyme, beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer, then cook until slightly thickened. Soon, you'll have the most delicious dipping sauce to complete your French dip.

What is the difference between French dip and Italian beef? ›

Technically, a French Dip is made with thinly sliced beef and braised in a broth or au jus while an Italian Beef is braised with lots of Italian herbs, spices and the pickled vegetables giving it a distinct tang that the French Dip doesn't have.

Does French dip come with cheese? ›

It is usually served plain but a popular variation is to top with Swiss cheese, onions, and a dipping container of beef broth produced from the cooking process (termed au jus, "with juice"). Beef stock, a light beef gravy, or beef consommé is sometimes substituted.

Are beef broth and au jus the same? ›

Beef broth is made by simmering beef bones, mirepoix (typically onion, carrots, and celery), hearty herbs, and spices in water, to extract flavor into the liquid. Au jus is basically beefed up beef broth. Amplify the savory flavor of beef broth by simmering it with drippings from roast beef (double beef flavor).

What chips are best for French Dip? ›

I will always recommend serving this French onion dip with ridged potato chips, but if you don't have them on hand, plain potato chips or fresh veggies will work too. Store any leftover dip in the fridge for up to 4 days.

What is a wet French dip sandwich? ›

The basic concept is the same at both places – Philippe's serves their French Dip “wet” which means that the roll is dipped in the meat juices and then filled with roast beef, Cole's serves theirs with a side of au jus which diners dip their sandwich into.

What makes a French Dip French? ›

There is further uncertainty about why the dish is called the French dip. It could be due to Philippe's heritage, the French roll it is served on, or because the police officer's name was French. The second restaurant that claims to have invented the French dip is Cole's, also known as Cole's Pacific Electric Buffet.

Can I use beef stock instead of au jus? ›

Not usually. Beef broth describes a liquid usually made by boiling beef bones and offal in water with some aromatics until the flavor in the solids flavor the liquid. Au jus describes a way of serving meat in its own juices or in a sauce made from its juices, which may include broth.

Can I use beef gravy instead of au jus? ›

Yes! A 1 ounce packet of brown gravy mix can be used in place of the au jus mix. The flavor may be slightly different because there is a different amount of sodium and a different seasoning base, but it shouldn't change the recipe much and it will still be delicious!

What is the difference between jus and au jus? ›

Jus is a specific type of sauce, made from meat juice that has typically been derived from a roast. It's thus typically served as an accompaniment to meat, especially roast beef, which is then known as beef "au jus".

Does mayo go on French dips? ›

I love to serve my easy french dip with mayo and melty cheese. Butter one side of each piece of bread and toast it slightly in the oven. Layer the mayo on the toasted bread, add shredded beef, and a slice of cheese. Remove the au jus drippings from the roast pan.

What is a standard French dip? ›

French dip, a sandwich traditionally consisting of sliced roast beef (though pork, ham, turkey, and lamb are sometimes used), served on French bread, and eaten au jus (“with juice,” referring to the flavourful drippings of the meat left over from roasting).

What's the difference between French dip and Philly? ›

What does French fry dipping sauce taste like? ›
